2020 VIRTUAL LISTENING SESSIONS
In fall 2020, NCI hosted a series of virtual listening sessions providing all Nevadans with opportunities to weigh in on a variety of topics to help shape and inform the Nevada State Climate Strategy. Each of the sessions were recorded and can be viewed below.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Monday, september 14/1-2:30pm
Nevada has among the most diverse energy portfolios in the country, with the potential for further development of both solar and geothermal generation from the utility to modular scale. The state has adopted an aggressive renewable portfolio standard of 50% by 2030, and although we are close, additional renewable investments will be needed to achieve this target and the emission reduction goals. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:

LAND USE &
LAND CHANGE
Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 15/2:30-4pm
Nevada’s diverse landscapes provides natural storage of carbon that would otherwise be in the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. Although forests hold much of the carbon, the sagebrush and high desert ecosystems across the majority of Nevada’s lands also store carbon. For this reason, how we use and alter land is critical to managing carbon and meeting our established emissions reduction targets. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:

TRANSPORTATION
TRANSFORMATION
thursday, SEPTEMBER 17/1-2:30pm
How we get from place to place matters. The transportation sector is the number one source of greenhouse gases, both in Nevada and across the United States, and therefore a top priority for addressing climate change. To move Nevada’s climate future forward and reduce emissions while meeting the needs of our communities, we have the opportunity to rethink, reinvent, and redesign transportation and mass transit. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:

AIR QUALITY
Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 22/2:30-4pm
Climate change and air quality are inextricably linked. Tailpipe emissions combined with high temperatures can amplify the production of ground level ozone, while escalating intensity and frequency of wildfires across the West increases the amounts of both particulate matter and ozone in the air. These changes to our air impact the health of our communities and quality of life. While Nevada has done great work to improve air quality across the state, climate change could undermine the progress we’ve made. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:

URBAN PLANNING
Thursday, SEPTEMBER 24/2:30-4pm
Las Vegas and Reno rank among the fastest warming cities in the entire United States. With a rapidly warming future comes more intense and long heat waves, less water, and increasing energy demands. Therefore, it is critical to advance integrated planning that considers the compounding challenges of climate change in addition to the already complex needs of urban communities. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:

ECONOMIC RECOVERY
Tuesday, September 29/2:30-4pm
Economies around the world have been decimated by the COVID-19 epidemic. But the impact here in Nevada has been particularly devastating. As we recover and rebuild our economy, the state is looking at opportunities to diversify our economy, build capacity, and create new good paying jobs in new and emerging corners of the market. Given the rise of climate action across the world, demand to fill jobs in clean tech, renewable construction and maintenance, outdoor recreation, and environmental stewardship is growing. Nevada can leverage and lead in these growing sectors of the economy.

GREEN BUILDINGS
THURSday, October 1/1-2:30PM
The fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in Nevada is from air conditioning and refrigeration. Nevada’s growing population and increasing temperatures in our major cities could drive these emissions even higher. Enhancing the efficiency of our homes and the places we work can help us change that trend and save dollars on energy bills. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:

CLIMATE JUSTICE
Tuesday, October 6/2:30-4pm
Low income households, communities of color, and indigenous people are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Whether it is lack of air conditioning on the hottest days, deficient mass transit in locations with affordable housing, or insufficient services for climate-related conditions like drought, vulnerable populations are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Opportunities to address underlying issues while also enhancing community resilience to climate must be identified to ensure all Nevadans can cope with climate change. During this listening session, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your feedback and perspectives on the following:
